Edit: Maybe or? Another solution, if you're okay with wiping the drive: boot from the 9.1 CD and use Drive Setup to make 2 partitions. Install 9.1 to one of them. Boot from your 9.1 partition, and use the 8.5/8.6 CD you burned to install 8.5 to the other partition and then update it to 8.6. Then use the Startup Disk control panel to tell it you want to boot from your 8.6 partition.
As a bonus, this gives you the option of using 9.1 (or 9.2.x) if you ever need it for something, but you can still run 8.6 as your everyday OS. I dont have a mac os 8 machine, and the earliest system my iMac can run is 9.1 so I can't test for myself. However, maybe try making a mac os 9 or 10 disc to see it it boots from that, but not actually installing the system. I do have working os 9 and 10 disks, and still have my original media for my iMacs. If you cant get a bootable disk going at all, perhaps someone could make you working system 8 disks and mail them to you? Is there a version of that tutorial specifically for the G3?
It didn't really work for me. I couldn't get it to access any files on the USB. The USB did show up in open firmware and I thought I copied the path exactly.
Has someone else done this on a G3? Is the path something like '/pci@f2000000/usb@19/disk@1'? Or maybe the reason it didn't work is I didn't have a dmg and so couldn't do a restore? I just copied all the files to it. I also don't know the path I'm supposed to enter for the last couple of steps as I'm sure it's different for OS 8.6.
